A paver pool deck is a durable surface made of interlocking pavers set over a compacted aggregate base and a layer of bedding sand, surrounding your pool and connecting it to your home and yard. The textured pavers provide good traction when wet, and many colors stay comfortable underfoot in summer sun. The pavers work together as a flexible system, so the deck handles ground movement and temperature swings without cracking.
It is ideal for homeowners with a cracked, stained, or slippery concrete deck, a pool surrounded by bare dirt or grass, or a deck that floods or sinks. The best time to act is when cracks, loose coping, or standing water first appear, before they become a safety hazard or a costly rebuild.
When the job is done right, you get a safe, attractive pool deck that drains well, stays comfortable for bare feet, and adds real value to your home. If a paver is ever damaged or stained, it can be replaced without tearing out the whole deck.
A paver pool deck makes sense for homeowners whose current deck is cracked, rough, slippery, or heaving. It is also a good fit if you have just installed a new pool and need a finished surround, if the concrete around your pool gets too hot for bare feet, or if water pools on the deck instead of draining away. Many homeowners also upgrade the deck before selling, because a clean, modern pool area makes a strong impression.
The best time to act is when the first signs of trouble appear. A raised edge, a sunken section, or a slick, algae-covered patch is a real safety risk for children and guests. Spring is a popular time to build so the deck is ready for the swim season, but pool decks can be installed through much of the year, and planning ahead often gets you a better spot on our schedule.
If you choose not to address a failing pool deck, the problems tend to grow. Cracks fill with water that freezes and widens them every winter, uneven sections create tripping hazards, and poor drainage sends water toward your foundation or into the pool area. Slippery surfaces around water are especially dangerous, and patching rarely matches the original finish, so many homeowners end up paying for a full replacement after years of repairs.
Every project starts with a free on-site estimate. We visit your home, measure the pool area, look at the slope and drainage, and check the condition of the existing deck. We talk through the layout, paver styles, colors, and textures, and any extras like seating areas, steps, or a connecting walkway. You then receive a clear written quote, and once you approve it we schedule the work and mark out underground utility lines before any digging begins.
On installation day, we lay out the deck and set the finished height so it sits correctly against the pool coping and the back of your home, sloping gently away from the pool and house to shed water. We remove the old surface, excavate to the proper depth, and compact the soil underneath. We then install crushed aggregate in thin layers, compacting each one with a plate compactor until the base is firm, dense, and perfectly graded.
Once the base is ready, we install strong edge restraint along the borders and spread a smooth, consistent layer of bedding sand, screeded to the correct level. The pavers are laid by hand in your chosen pattern with tight, even joints, and we use a saw to cut pavers around the pool edge, curves, and borders for clean, precise lines. We then compact the pavers into the sand, sweep polymeric joint sand into every joint, and compact once more so the surface locks together. To finish, we activate the joint sand, clean the entire surface, grade soil along the edges, and remove all debris. We then walk the finished deck with you and review simple care tips. You get a stable, level, slip-resistant pool deck that is ready to enjoy.

The cost of a paver pool deck depends on several factors, and understanding them helps you plan with confidence. Size is the biggest one, since a larger deck requires more material, excavation, and labor. Pool shape matters too. A simple rectangular pool is more efficient to surround than a freeform pool with curves, which require more cutting and layout time.
The type of paver you choose also affects the price. Standard concrete pavers are the most budget-friendly, while premium concrete pavers, larger formats, and natural stone cost more. For pool decks, we recommend slip-resistant textures and lighter colors that stay cooler in the sun. Pattern plays a role as well, because a simple running bond is quicker to install than a herringbone or a design with contrasting borders.
Site conditions have a major impact. Removing an old concrete deck, hauling away debris, and dealing with soft soil, tree roots, or a sloped yard all add time and material. Drainage is another factor. Decks that need extra base depth, drain pipe, or channel drains to move water away from the pool and your foundation will cost more, but they protect your home. Limited access for equipment and material deliveries can also increase labor time.
Finally, add-ons will change the total. Steps, seating walls, fire pits, lighting, planting beds, and connecting walkways are popular upgrades that add function and character. We go over each of these during your free estimate, show you what drives the price on your specific project, and, if you are working within a budget, help you find ways to phase the work or adjust the design.
Maintenance is simple. Sweep the surface regularly, rinse it with a hose, and clean any algae or stains with a paver-safe cleaner. Every few years, top off the joint sand and consider applying a sealer to enhance the color and make cleaning easier. We are happy to show you exactly how to care for your deck when the project is finished.
Yes. We work around existing in-ground pools and fit the pavers neatly to your coping, so the deck looks clean and finished. We remove the old surface if needed, rebuild the base with proper drainage, and protect your pool during the work. We can also tie the deck into your patio, steps, or walkway.
All outdoor surfaces warm up in direct sun, but color makes a big difference. Lighter shades like cream, light gray, and tan stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark pavers or standard concrete, which makes them a popular choice around pools. We can help you pick a color that looks great with your home and stays comfortable for bare feet.
Not when the right paver is chosen. We recommend pavers with a matte, textured surface that gives good traction when wet, and polymeric joint sand helps water drain away instead of pooling on top. During your estimate, we can show you samples so you can see and feel the options.
